Changes to BACP’s Ethical Framework

As of 1st February 2010, the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) have published several small, but significant, changes to the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling & Psychotherapy.

The specific changes were outlined in the February edition of Therapy Today.  The new guidelines can be downloaded from BACP’s website by going to the following link: www.bacp.co.uk/ethical_framework/.

In Treatment: Now available on DVD

In Treatment is an American television drama series, about a psychotherapist, 53-year-old Dr. Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne), and his weekly sessions with patients. Each episode of In Treatment focuses on one patient, including Paul, who is seeing his clinical supervisor and psychotherapist, Gina, played by Dianne Wiest.

Sexual abuse and therapeutic services for children and young people in Northern Ireland

Sexual abuse effects a significant number of children and young people with UK-wide prevalence research (including Northern Ireland) indicating that 11 per cent of males and 21 per cent of females have experienced some kind of sexual abuse in childhood (Cawson et al, 2000). The same prevalence research also tells us that only a small proportion disclose this abuse, with 72 per cent of sexually abused children reporting that they did not tell anyone about the abuse at the time. Although 27 per cent told someone later, around a third (31 per cent) still had not told anyone by early adulthood.

HPC publishes conclusions on the proposed statutory regulation of psychotherapists and counsellors

The Health professions council has issued the following press statement:

The Health Professions Council (HPC) has today published its conclusions from a public consultation on the potential statutory regulation of psychotherapists and counsellors for the Secretary of State for Health.

The consultation ran for a three month period and incorporated recommendations made by the Psychotherapists and Counsellors Professional Liaison Group (PLG) and the HPC Council.

Counselling and psychotherapy for the prevention of suicide: a systematic review of the evidence

BACP has published a new review that considers the research available for the use of counselling and psychotherapy in the prevention of suicide, and aims to provide researchers and practitioners with a broader review of the evidence than has been considered by previous publications within this arena.

MAP research on male domestic abuse

The Men’s Advisory Project (MAP) is a counselling and support organisation for men in Northern Ireland.

Important research is currently being carried out to examine the experience of male victims of domestic abuse in Northern Ireland and their experience of service support. This research has two main strands:

1. Case studies of male victims

BACP Membership Research

BACP are asking all of its members to complete an online questionnaire that will help the organisation to improve its services and to establish what more they can do to meet the needs of its members.

BACP is offering one year’s free membership to 5 randomly selected members who complete their member research survey.

BACP rejects HPC proposals

The British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) has responded to the Professional Liaison Group’s (PLG) draft consultation, stating that it does not support the specific proposals to differentiate within the standards of proficiency and threshold entry levels to the register.

The Health Professions Council (HPC) has launched a three month consultation on the statutory regulation of psychotherapists and counsellors. It incorporates recommendations made by the Psychotherapists and Counsellors Professional Liaison Group (PLG) and the HPC Council.
