One-day Sexual Orientation Awareness Training

The Rainbow Project is Northern Ireland’s only agency specifically promoting the health and well-being of gay and bisexual men, and will be delivering Sexual Orientation Awareness training with a Counselling focus to counselling organisations in the Belfast Trust Area. Places are funded by the South and East Belfast Community of Interest under Investing for Health – Protect Life Funding.  The topics covered in the training will include:

  • Understanding same-sex attraction and use of appropriate terminology
  • Key health inequalities experienced by people who are same-sex attracted
  • Forms of homophobia and heterosexism
  • Barriers to accessing mainstream statutory service provision
  • Legislative and social policy context
  • Common issues when counselling LGB clients
  • Tips for improvement of practice

This training is specifically aimed at counsellors and counselling managers within Community/Voluntary/Statutory Organisations and will be held at the Belfast LGB Centre, 9-13 Waring Street, Belfast BT1 2DX on the following dates:

  • Thursday 4th of March 2010
  • Tuesday 30th of March 2010

The training day will be facilitated by Malachai O’Hara (Mental Health Development Officer) and Terry Sergeant who is an MBACP (Accred.) Counsellor and Accredited Sexual Minority (LGBT) Therapist.

All training begins at 9:30am sharp and finishes at 4:30pm (Lunch will not be provided).
